University of Santo Tomas Tigresses stop San Sebastian Lady Stags, near 3rd straight crown
Games Tuesday
2 p.m. – Ateneo vs Lyceum
4 p.m. – UST vs San Sebastian
University of Santo Tomas (UST) bucked the loss of Angeli Tabaquero and a gritty San Sebastian stand as it essayed a 25-21, 22-25, 25-20, 25-15 victory last night to move closer to a third straight championship in the Shakey’s V-League Season 7 at the Filoil Flying V Arena in San Juan.
Mary Jean Balse rammed in 16 hits, including 11 kills, while last season’s MVP Aiza Maizo and Maika Ortiz combined for 27 points as the Tigresses recovered from a second set setback to win the next two for the victory at the start of their best-of-three series for the first conference crown.
The Espana-based squad, which ruled the last two conferences of the league sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and presented by PLDT MyDSL, goes for the clincher Tuesday as they try to match La Salle’s three-peat feat in 2004-06.
“It’s an unending cycle of improvement. We have polished our offense and defense well and we played a great game. Hopefully we can sustain our form in the next game,” said UST assistant Coach Vilet Ponce De Leon.
But UST will be going for its sixth title overall without Tabaquero, a vital in the team’s rotation who sustained an injury in the first set following a bad fall off a spike. Read more…

San Sebastian’s Lady Stags clip Falcons, clinch last V-League Volleyball semis seat
San Sebastian knocked off Adamson from the semifinal race while annexing a record 10th Final Four appearance in the Shakey’s V-League as it fashioned out a 25-19, 27-25, 25-19 victory at the close of the quarterfinal round at The Arena in San Juan Thursday.
The Lady Stags came out of a fiercely fought second set with a solid game in the third as Thai import Jeng Bualee and Joy Benito took charge to secure the fourth and last seat in the crossover semis.
SSC thus closed out with a 2-1 card to tie early semifinalist Lyceum in Group 1. But the Lady Stags clinched the top seeding with a higher point ratio of 1.145 as against the Pirates’ 0.996.
Lyceum settles for No. 2 and will play the No. 1 team in Group 2 while San Sebastian takes on the No. 2 squad in the best-of-three semis.
UST, seeking a third straight championship in the league sponsored by Shakey’s Pizza and presented by PLDT MyDSL, and Ateneo were disputing the seeding at presstime.
